"Connecting and Engaging Students in Online Interactions: Chat, Threaded discussions and Group discussions"

This session will focus on describing different techniques for utilizing synchronous and asynchronous communication tools as graded assignments that are linked to course objectives.  Strategies, assessment, and lessons learned will be shared.  Sample grading rubrics will be provided.  Strategies for utilizing VISTA Chat will include preparation (the key to success), facilitation tips, the use of guest "speakers", to hand-raise or not to hand-raise (that is the question!), and the importance of a practice chat assignment.  Strategies for utilizing VISTA discussions will include instructor facilitation, student lead discussion groups, peer sharing and peer review groups, utilizing grading rubrics, effective online grading, minimizing attachments, and design tips.

Nicole O'Grady, MEd. MBA, has been a full time Assistant Clinical Professor in the College of Education since 2001. Her online teaching experience began in 1996 using the WebTools with VCC. She has been teaching exclusively on the web in the WebCT management system since 2003. She has designed eleven online courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Her courses have used a combination of synchronous and asynchronous communication tools to engage learners in the exchange of ideas.
