The B.S.Ed. in Career and Technical Education, Occupational Education emphasis degree is designed for those who do not desire to be Secondary Education certified in the State of Arizona.  This program is an online degree.  However, the program can be customized to meet certification requirements in certain situation.  Contact a faculty member for more information.  This degree is designed for those who have occupational work experience or have occupational courses at a community college and are seeking a Bachelors degree and for those with career goals outside of secondary teaching.  Many students who pursue this degree are already CTE or "vocational" certified in the State of Arizona.  Others are working in business and industry and desire an occupational education degree.

This degree has options for alternative forms of credit such as taking a NOCTI examination (35 credits) and/or by providing evidence of occupational work experience (18 credits) A combination of the NOCTI, occupational experience and coursework can be used to fulfill the 53 hours of the major requirements.  The CTE courses are all online.  The liberal studies can be take online or transferred from the community college.  Note:  A maximum of 64 credits of community college credit can be transferred to NAU.

APPROVED PROGRAM OF STUDY: Courses selected with the approval of the advisor. 120-hour plan.

University Liberal Studies (35 Hours minimum):  Requirements are determined by the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies.
Summary of Liberal Studies Requirements
  • Foundation Requirements (7 credits)
    • 4 credits of English 105
    • 3 credits of Math
  • Distribution Requirements (28 credits)
    • 7 credits of Science (to include at least one Lab Science)
    • 6 credits of Social and Political Worlds
    • 6 credits of Aesthetic and Humanistic Inquiry
    • 6 credits of Cultural Understanding
    • 3 additional credits of any liberal studies distribution course
  • Optional Freshman Seminar (3 credits)
    • One optional freshman seminar may be used in the distribution block to which the topic most appropriately applies. (Effective AY07-08)

  • You can choose courses that meet both the Diversity requirement and a Distribution requirement.

    MAJOR FIELD: Occupational Education

    NOCTI Credit  - 35 Hours

    Students may earn 35 credits for successful passage of the National Occupational Competency Testing Institute test administered by Northern Arizona University.  (35 credits will be applied toward the 53 hours of the Major requirements).  Click here for more information on NOCTI.

    Occupational Experience – 18 Hours

    Students may earn 18 credits for meeting requirements for Career and Technical Education Certification.  Proof of VTE or CTE certification from the Arizona Department of Education, Teacher Certification Unit; 1535 West Jefferson, Phoenix, AZ  85007; phone (602) 542-4367 is required.  (18 credits will be applied toward the 53 hours of the Major requirements)
