Exceptions and
Student Individualized Plans

Most academic requirements apply to all students in a particular plan (major, minor, or certificate) or subplan (emphasis or focus).

However, there are two situations in which the requirements differ by individual student:

§        student exceptions, which involve substituting one course for another or changing a requirement in some way

§        student individualized plans, which involve specific requirements that are developed for students individually, with the 15-unit focus in BAiLS and the 18-unit content emphasis in elementary education as examples

These require approval by individuals in each academic area who are authorized to do so. These individuals have completed specific training, and they ensure that the exceptions and individualized plans they approve are communicated to degree audit staff to be entered in NAU’s student administration system.

These approved changes should be sent to degree audit staff as soon as they are approved; at the latest, changes for graduating seniors must be sent within six weeks before these students apply for graduation.

Degree audit staff enter submitted changes within two weeks whenever possible; however, it may take longer during busy times (for instance, toward the ends of semesters).
