Four Corners Summer Job Opportunities

Summer Employment:

Along with Upward Bound and the Nizhoni Academy, Four Corners Upward Bound Math & Science hires a large summer staff to work with our students during the summer program. Positions are available for both academic and residential settings. If you are interested in working with high school students and helping them pursue their higher education goals, consider the following positions:

Academic Advisors

Academic Advisors work one-on-one with students to help plan academic and career goals. Sohpomores and juniors begin to map out a four-year plan while seniors complete and submit applications to postsecodary institutions. Academic Advisors have a limited amount of time with each student, so knowledge and efficiency are our top priority.

Attendance Clerk

The Student Office Assistant at the Four Corners Upward Bound Math & Science Program ( Four Corners ) will work 20 hours a week (12:30-4:30 Monday-Friday) and is a key player in office and program functions. Student Worker responsibilities include both basic office operations – such as collecting attendance from classrooms for high school summer academy, computer work, filing, copying, mailings – as well as program support, relaying messages between classrooms the residence hall, and office staff, researching and tracking information and working on some projects independently. We are looking for someone who enjoys working with people and students. The applicant must be friendly, responsible, organized and self-motivated.

Math Instructor

The Math Instructor will teach high school students basic math study skills in algebra and geometry and evaluate the use of these skills so the students will master them and use them during the school year. Students will also be quizzed frequently using multiple choice questions from practice ACT exams to increase students' speed and accuracy for this college bound exam.

Pre-Engineering Math Instructor

The Pre-Engineering Math Instructor will meet with NAU engineering and math faculty to develop and implement a conceptually focused math course designed to teach high school students calculation skills needed for math intensive careers such as engineering and science.

Science Instructor

The Science Instructor will teach high school students how to interpret graphs and comprehend technical reading passages quickly. The main responsibility of the Science Instructor is to help students increase their scores on the ACT college entrance exam.

Navajo Instructor

Thirty of the Four Corners Academy students will be taught the importance of clan relations within the Navajo culture including how and why formal introductions are presented. The Navajo Instructor will hold student to high standards. Most of the students will be Navajo and should be required to contribute as leaders. A few of the students will know nothing about the Dine' and will need support and encouragement to learn to pronounce common Navajo terms and become aware of the complexity of the Navajo alphabet.

Computer Lab Aids

The Computer Lab Aid assists while our students are working in the Computer Labs both in the Central Union and in the Residence Hall. Lab Aids must currently work for ITS and be familiar with running an NAU computer lab as well.

Research Instructors

Research Instructors lead a hands-on, four-week, amth and/or science research project with a small group of students. The research project culminates with the students preparing and presenting at the Annual Research Symposium. Research Instructors are typically NAU graduate students who can provide the space, equipment and expertise for the project. Teaching experience or other experience with youth is preferred.

Student Office Worker

The Student Office Assistant/Driver at the Four Corners Upward Bound Math & Science Program ( Four Corners ) will work 40 hours a week (7:30-4:30 Monday-Friday) and is a key player in office and program functions. Student Worker responsibilities include both basic office operations – such as typing, filing, copying, mailings – as well as program support – collecting and recording daily attendance, relaying messages between classroom teachers, residence hall, and office staff, transporting program participants in university vans, researching and tracking information and working on some projects independently. As a student worker, we also require that the applicant does not take classes during the program. Therefore, we are looking for someone who is comfortable working with people and students, driving large vehicles, and working on computers. The applicant must be friendly, responsible, organized and self-motivated.

Four Corners/Upward Bound/Nizhoni Desk Assistants

The Front Desk can be a flurry of activity at times and very quiet at other times. Desk Assistants must be able to keep a lot of information organized and act as the central hub of communication for all of the Summer Program staff, students and families. Desk Assistants must attend some parts of atraining during the spring semester as well as the week just prior to the Summer Program. Desk Assistants may take classes or work other jobs at the same time.

Four Corners/Upward Bound/Nizhoni Summer Assistants

Living in the residence hall with the students during the Summer Program, Summer Assistants contribute to all residential aspects of the program including all evening and weekend activities. Training for Summer Assistants includes a five-week Mini-Course at the end of the spring semester and a Training Week in the residence hall just prior to the Summer Program. Summer Assistants must be sophomore status and cannot take another job or attend classes during the Summer Program or Training Week. Being a Summer Assistant is one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have!
