Asthma Case Studies: The Fading Basketball Star

basketball, rim, and backboard You are the junior high school basketball coach. Edward, one of your players, came to you this morning and told you that his older brother Tavis had to stop playing basketball during their usual morning one-on-one. Tavis is one of your best players. He has always been very competitive and rarely took breaks in the past. As a concerned coach, you decide that you should investigate the situation further.

Tavis and Edward Benally live with their mom on the western side of the Navajo Nation in the northeastern part of Arizona. It is an unseasonably cold and dry winter this year and the boys have been spending many mornings chopping wood for the woodstove. After chopping wood they usually have time to play some basketball before the bus comes.

Before practice you talk to Tavis; he admits that he seems to be having some breathing problems and sometimes his chest hurts. This morning was worse than usual so he stopped playing just five minutes after he started. Tavis admitted he was embarrassed that he couldn't keep up with his little brother, so he said he wanted to finish some homework that was due today.

Make lists of what facts you know, what other facts you need to know, and what you need to learn more about.
