Asthma Case Studies: The Case of the Playground Sickness

You are the elementary school nurse and have noticed many children coming in from recess with headaches, nausea, and coughing.

Annie is a student that you have seen in the past, but she has been coming in every afternoon this week. You decide to spend this afternoon on the playground to talk to the kids and teachers.

Annie is a second grader at the new elementary school on the reservation. The school is located near open fields that harvest grass seed for commercial use. The bus brings the kids to school on a long dirt road. This is a great place for the school because there is no traffic noise. It is early spring and time for the fields to be prepared for summer. This includes annual burning and large machinery tilling the fields.

Make lists of what facts you know, what other facts you need to know, and what you need to learn more about.
