Chapter 1, Section 1:
For Students
Internships and Professional Benefits
Internships are work experiences in a business or public agency that can introduce you to
actual professional activity in a field that interest you. Some internships are open to
high school students who are preparing for college and wish to work and learn about a specific
environmental field. Most internships are for students who are already enrolled in college,
but there are many that are not. A great site to check out nationwide environmental internships
is www.eco.org/.
The Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals
(ITEP) at Northern Arizona University (NAU)
also describes environmental internships and offers other services. See the
Financial Aid chapter for more links.
The environmental professions are among the most personally rewarding careers. Most of
these are full time careers that pay reliable and comfortable salaries. Many of these
jobs involve working out-of-doors, exploring the communities of life that depend upon
wind, water, and land for their survival. As a wildlife specialist, park ranger, biologist
hydrologist, forester, or any other resource manager, you can contribute to improving our
care of the Earth. You may also grow in knowledge and wisdom and become one of your tribe’s
experts and leaders in land management decision-making.
