Chapter 4, Section 4:
Northern Arizona University

Northern Arizona University's Center for Environmental Sciences and Education provides a curriculum that prepares students for environmental careers in research, industry, education and tribal, community or government service. Degree programs are built around one of eight areas of emphasis: Biology, Chemistry, Applied Geology, Applied Mathematics, Microbiology, Environmental Communication, Environmental Administration and Policy or Environmental Management. The B.S. program requires a one-semester internship. The Center’s homepage has links to course requirements for the eight fields of emphasis and to course descriptions. www.nau.edu/~envsci/env-degree/index.html

The College of Ecosystem Science and Management at NAU has three departments: the Department of Applied Indigenous Studies, the School of Forestry and the Department of Geography and Public Planning. Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in Applied Indigenous Studies can have a strong environmental component with courses like Indigenous Conservation Knowledge and other natural sciences electives. The School of Forestry offers a strongly science-based program that employs an ecosystem approach to environmental restoration and forest management. The holistic American Indian Forestry Program offers Bachelor of Science degrees and the Applied Indigenous Studies major includes a certificate in environmental studies. Links to all three programs are at: www.cesm.nau.edu/

The Parks and Recreation Management program at NAU’s School of Forestry prepares undergraduates for careers in this rapidly growing field. The Bachelor of Science program includes a one-semester internship. www.prm.nau.edu/

NAU’s Bachelor of Science in Forestry is a comprehensive program that teaches tree and forestry science as well as hydrology, mapping, environmental conservation and cultural perspectives. www.for.nau.edu/majors_courses/index.htm

The Department of Geography and Public Planning at NAU provides a broad array of environmental Bachelor of Science degrees. Geographers study natural and social data on the Earth’s surface and organize that information into patterns of meaning. The program offers the following degrees: B.S. in Geography; B.S. in Education in Geography (includes teacher certification); B.S. in Applied Geography, Remote Sensing Emphasis; and B.S. in Applied Geography, Geographic Information Management Emphasis. Explanations of these fields and course descriptions are found at: www.geog.nau.edu/ugrad_g.html

Public planning describes and seeks to manage the human-built environment. At NAU, this problem-solving field is represented by two major specializations: The Public Planning Bachelor of Science degree can emphasize either Land Use Planning or Environmental Planning. www.geog.nau.edu/ugrad_p.html

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at NAU’s College of Engineering Technology offers a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering (B.C.E.). With a foundation in civil engineering, the B.S.E. in Environmental Engineering prepares graduates for careers in designing and operating facilities for remediation, water and waste water treatment and hazardous substance containment. A strong background in mathematics and science is required, and undergraduates continue with in-depth courses in physics, chemistry, biochemistry, computer aided design (CAD) and computer programming. www.cet.nau.edu/Academic/CENE/ene.html

NAU’s College of Health Professions Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) in Health Promotion is designed for students who have completed a 2-year Associate degree who wish to earn a Bachelor’s degree. The program provides courses of study for careers in health promotion, disease prevention and health education via Distance Learning. The program has a strong American Indian cultural component and in addition to environmental health issues, students study communication and management skills. Distance Learning courses are electronically transmitted from NAU to the students’ communities so that they need not quit their jobs or leave their families to earn the Bachelor’s degree. www.nau.edu/hp/dept/hep/

The Biology Department in the College of Arts and Sciences offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology, Biology in Secondary Education, Zoology and Microbiology. www.nau.edu/~service/studentinfo/biology.html

Northern Arizona University’s Chemistry Department has Bachelor of Science degree programs in Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, and extended B.S. programs with emphases for Health Professions, Geochemistry, Education in Chemistry (includes teacher certification for secondary schools). Find a sample curriculum at: www.nau.edu/~service/studentinfo/chemistry.html
