The NAU GLOBE partner works with informal and K-12 educators in Northern Arizona, particularly rural and reservation schools in learning about and implementing the GLOBE Program. The franchise is jointly operated by the Science and Mathematics Learning Center (SMLC) and the Environmental Education Outreach Program (EEOP), at Northern Arizona University. The SMLC provides leadership in providing GLOBE professional development and EEOP provides technical assistance in GLOBE program implementation.

GLOBE

The GLOBE Program is a worldwide hands-on environmental science and education program that unites students, educators, and scientists from around the globe in studying the environment. The goals of the GLOBE Program are: to enhance the environmental awareness of individuals worldwide, to increase scientific understanding of the Earth, and to improve student achievement in science and mathematics.

Over 7,000 schools in more than 80 countries are participating in the GLOBE Program. As part of the GLOBE Program students:

GLOBE students have reported over one million science observations in the areas of atmosphere, hydrology, landcover/geology, and soils, guided by over 10,000 GLOBE-trained teachers. These data are used by GLOBE students and scientist to support environmental research and other environmental science programs. Environmental scientists from many nations have participated in selecting GLOBE environmental measurements, ensuring overall quality control of data, and using the data in their research.

GLOBE PARTNERS

The Science and Mathematics Learning Center (SMLC) at Northern Arizona University is a professional development, research, and resource center dedicated to the continual improvement of science, mathematics, and technology education for all students in K-12 schools throughout Arizona. The Center fosters collaborative partnerships with and among K-12 educational communities, community colleges, and universities as well as with science and technology-rich resources to develop, implement, support, and evaluate programs for systemic reform consistent with national and state initiatives in science, mathematics, and technology education. The SMLC continually works to design programs and resources to address specific needs identified by educators, administrators, and policy makers.

The Environmental Education Outreach Program (EEOP) promotes Native American students' interest in environmental careers that will benefit themselves and their communities, and to assist their schools in improving environmental literacy. Students participate as observers and experimenters reporting in their local region. The Environmental Education Outreach Program is part of the Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP) at Northern Arizona University. The purpose of the Environmental Education Outreach Program (EEOP) is to interest Native American students in environmental careers and to assist schools in improving environmental science literacy. EEOP does this by:

The EEOP program currently outreaches to over 400 educators throughout Arizona, Wisconsin, Washington, and New Mexico. The EEOP has been successful in piquing students' interest in higher education and environmental careers by bringing exciting environmental education curriculum into the classroom. The development of partnerships with educational staff as well as community members has led to building of bridges between the traditional values of Native American people and Environmental Education.
