GLOBE
YUMA PROJECTS:
In the fall, 2000, the Science and Mathematics Learning Center sponsored a GLOBE workshop for upper elementary and middle school teachers in Yuma, Arizona. The workshop was held at Castle Dome Middle School, where a majority of participants teach.
There were three weekend sessions, consisting of 35 hours of professional development for the teachers to receive their GLOBE certification. The weekend sessions began at 4:00pm on Friday and ended at 4:00pm on Saturday. The first weekend, September 15-16, focused on the GLOBE atmosphere protocols and website. The second weekend October 6-7, the teachers learned the GLOBE landcover and hydrology protocols. Dr. Kitt Farrell-Poe, Associate Professor and Water Resources Extension Specialist and Arizona Extension Water Quality Coordinator for the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department at the University of Arizona, was the collaborating hydrologist. The third and final weekend, October 27-28, focused on GLOBE soil protocols with the collaboration of Dr. Kirk Anderson, a geoarchaeologist and gemorphologist with the Navajo Nation Archaeology Department, at Northern Arizona University.
Castle Dome Middle School is in the process of revising their school science curricula and is planning to use GLOBE atmosphere and hydrology protocols with students.
