Hazy day at the Grand Canyon
Introduction:

All this week we learned about air quality and haze in the Grand Canyon.  On Tuesday we went to the Cholla power plant.  We learned how they use the scrubbers to clean the air so that no toxics leave the plant.
On Wednesday we went to Ft. Valley Experimental Forest where we met with Julie Blake and Thom Alcoze.  They told us all kinds of things about forest fires and how they take care of the forest.
On Thursday we went to the Grand Canyon and to the IMAX theatre where we watched a great film of the Grand Canyon. The film was about the way it was when John Wesley Powell first went down the river, then the river  was named after him. Later on in the day we went to the real Grand Canyon and met with Carl Bowman. He showed us the haze at the Grand Canyon and there wasn't that much haze but at least we did see some haze. He also showed us how they keep track of the haze and then he gave a good speech before we left back to Flagstaff.

Recommendation:
  • for the United States to carpool so that there is less pollutants in the air
  • less tourist in the major areas
  • thining the tress so that there are not forest fires
  • less people in the metropolitan areas

Positive Consequences:
  • less cars so therefore less pollution
  • not as much haze in the places they visit
  • so trees won't need to compete for minerals and water, and metropolitan areas won't get sick from the haze

Negative Consequences:
  • will need bigger cars so they can carpool
  • not as much money for the big attractions
  • less shade for the people
  • less money for the major companies
Another hazy day at the Smokey Mnts.
