Hello, we are 8th graders.  We are in the Summer Scholars Program here at NAU.  We have been researching the haze in the Grand Canyon.  We've done our research in the library, internet, reading articles, asking questions from the staff and talking field trips to Cholla Power Plant, Fort Valley, and the Grand Canyon.  We found out that the haze in the Grand Canyon is coming from many different areas.  It's coming from the winds, surrounding cities like Las Vegas, power plants, forest fires, and dust.  The good thing about the haze is that in the winter seasons it settles down.  We were told that in about 50 years it may go away if more improvements occur, like installing more scrubbers in power plants, avoiding forest fires and educating the community.
While we were in the program we found it very helpful and understood the problem with the haze in the Grand Canyon.  We have thought about the problem and we both recommended the following:
Recommendation:
More scrubbers on the power plants.

Positive Consequences:
1.  Less people will get sick from inhaling the haze.
2.  More fresh air to breath.

Negative Consequences:
1.  Too much money to install scrubbers.
2.  Price of electricity will rise.
