Introduction:
We have been studying the Grand Canyon for the past week, trying to determine where the haze is coming from. We visited the Cholla power plant, Ft. Valley Experimental Forest, and the Grand Canyon itself. We talked to proffesionals and asked them questions. The Cholla Power Plant uses coal for their fuel and uses scrubbers to reduce pollution in the air, but only 90% of pollution is stopped and 10% is released into the air. At the Ft. Valley Experimental Forest we leaned how they burn the forest every 6 to 7 years. This contributes to the haze in the Grand Canyon, but is important for forest growth. The Grand Canyon we saw the haze first hand and talked with Carl Bowman who is in charge of air quality in the Grand Canyon. He told us that the majority of the pollution comes from California, Las Vegas, and Phoenix. |
