| Radiation comes from
a lot of places including the sun. So some radiation is natural,
but other radiation caused by nuclear power plants, X-ray machines, and
other things we get benefits of electricity, good medical care and other
helpful products but we also get radiation form them as well which as you
know might cause health problems.
Haze is caused by air pollution like sulfur dioxide (power plants and some factories ), nitrogen oxide ( power plants, and cars), ozone ( cars and factories) particulate matter ( factories, wood stoves, fires, fires, dirt roads). When these pollutant are carried by the air over large distances the cause haze. Because these pollutants get carried from one area to the next, the pollution from one state combines with the pollution form the surrounding states and the haze impacts everyone, particularly the folks down wind. They only way to address it is for all of the people in the air shed to work together to reduce the pollution. |

Here’s how the
air quality program works. EPA looks at the information on each of the
pollutants and determines how that pollutant effects people’s health
and what is does to the environment ( these are called National Ambient
Air Quality Standards) and tell the state and tribal governments that they
have to make sure that pollution level need to stay below these safe levels.
The State and tribal governments then make plans to tell the factories,
dry cleaners and other people how to generate pollution how much pollution
they can release to keep the air safe. You might ask why allow people to
pollute at all, well it is important that people have jobs and have clothes
and cars and electricity. In producing all these things factories and businesses
give people jobs and unfortunately generate pollution. So the key to the
air quality plans is to balance the need for goods and services that generate
pollution and protecting the environment.
Out west the view is better that here in the east. In the east the Haze is bad because we have a lot of cars, factories and other pollution and we also have a lot of humidity. The water in the water in the air also reduces visibility and can interfere with the view. In the west the factories are more spread out and there is less humidity so there is a better view. |
