The Grand Canyon haze problems and recommendation
The Mohave Power Plant is creating the most haze out of the two power plants in the Grand Canyon area. This includes Mohave Generating Station in Laughlin, NE and Navajo Generating Station in Page, AZ. These Stations produce large amounts of electricity but also let out Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), which makes up about 31% of the haze in the Grand Canyon. My solution to this problem is installing scrubbers in the power plant. This will reduce at least 93% of the Sulfur dioxide released into the air. Navajo Generating Station has already conquered the stress of installing scrubbers in their station but Mohave is still putting up scrubbers and should be done in the year 2005. The positive side of this is situation that the air pollution in the Grand Canyon will be reduced greatly. The negative side of this situation is that the scrubbers cost millions of dollars. Below is a picture of Mohave Generating Station and the haze it causes. |
