Dates to Remember

The academic year inclues Fall, Spring and the following summer (all sessions).

October Students new to NAU will also be considered for scholarships based on their admissions application. Apply for admission as soon as possible for the following academic year.
Recipients of federal financial aid may be required to participate in the Federal Quality Assurance Program. Quality Assurance helps us improve financial aid services and processes. If chosen as a participant, you will be required to provide additional documentation for verification purposes.
The FAFSA Renewal Application process for the following year will begin. It is important for students to update their contact information (i.e. email address, physical mailing address) via 'FAFSA On The Web' at their web site www.fafsa.ed.gov in order that Renewal FAFSA's or PIN numbers may be delivered in a timely manner to the proper location. Remember: The Renewal FAFSA cannot be completed until January 1.
January The FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA can be signed, dated and submitted for the following academic year beginning January 1. NAU’s institution code is 001082. It is to your advantage to complete the FAFSA as early as possible using the Federal Tax Returns requested on the application. If you have not completed your tax return, use estimated income information; it is your responsibility to correct the information when you complete your tax return. Contact the Office of Student Financial Aid to inquire about submitting the correct documents. For quicker processing, you can apply on-line at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. You should also apply for a federal PIN number at www.pin.ed.gov if you haven't received one previously.
You will receive a copy of the FAFSA results in the form of a Student Aid Report (SAR) -- please read carefully to ensure that there were not any problems in the transmission. If there were no problems, we should also receive an electronic transmission of the same results around the same time that you receive your SAR. There are a variety of documents that may be requested from you to complete your file. Check LOUIE to see which documents may be needed.
February If you are applying for need based scholarships, you should submit your FAFSA to the federal processor or apply online by February 14.

March

All admitted students, new and continuing, may fill out the Scholarship Interest Form.  This form is not an application form, but allows the NAU Office of Student Financial Aid to search for additional scholarships for you.  It is in effect throughout your attendance at NAU, however it can be updated at any time.  While there is no deadline, most scholarships are awarded in the Spring for the following academic year, so we recommend you complete this form by March of each year.  As some scholarships are need-based, you should also file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well.

The Financial Aid Awarding process begins in March.  You will receive an Award Notice indicating the type and amount of aid you have been awarded if your financial aid file is complete.  A Master Promissory Note (MPN) will be mailed to you if you were awarded loans and have not signed a MPN previously and, if you want to accept the loan(s), you must return one copy of the Promissory Note as instructed.  Please read this information carefully and access LOUIE for additional information regarding your financial aid.

Mid-May

If you plan to be funded based on concurrent enrollment at NAU and another institution, you must have an approved Consortium Agreement prior to disbursement.  You should be begin the Consortium Agreement process by contacting our office or the other school you will be attending.

Steps to Processing your Financial Aid Application

  5. Results will be returned to you in the form of a Student Aid Report (SAR).  Be sure to read this information and keep the document for your records.  If there is a problem indicated, follow the instructions and act immediately.  If there are no problems with your SAR, the NAU Office of Student Financial Aid will receive the information electronically.  Contact our office to verify receipt of the SAR information or to resolve questions regarding your SAR.
  6. The NAU Office of Student Financial Aid will mail you an Estimated Cost of Attendance letter that explains your anticipated educational costs and your family contribution for the following academic year.  This information should be used to help you determine your financial needs. Please also view the 'Essential Costs' via our web site.
  7. A request for further documents will be mailed to you, if necessary.  You may also access your financial aid file through LOUIE to determine what documents we are requesting (some documents can be downloaded from our web site).  Processing and verification will take up to two weeks after we have received all of your documentation.
  8. The Financial Aid Awarding process will begins early March and an Award Notice will be mailed approximately one week after your file is verified.
  9. Review your obligations and eligibility requirements for financial aid and scholarships.

  12. First-time borrowers at NAU must attend Federal Direct Loan Entrance Counseling prior to receiving or transacting a loan for payment of tuition, fees and housing.  You may access this information online
