Your Rights and Responsibilities
As a Financial Aid Applicant/Recipient, You Have A Right To:
- Confidentiality as outlined in the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Reasonable access to your financial aid record.
- Reasonable access to all application forms on a timely basis.
- A written notification of your financial aid eligibility, including the Cost of Attendance and Family Contribution used to determine the amount of your eligibility.
- Have your Cost of Attendance and Family Contribution re-evaluated based on unusual circumstances.
- Written information that describes the terms and conditions of all awards made by the Office
of Student Financial Aid.
- Return any portion of a disbursed student or parent loan within the time frame identified by federal regulations.
- Appeal your financial aid and scholarship status.
As a Financial Aid Applicant/Recipient, You Have A Responsibility To:

Read and understand all communications sent to you - ASK if you have questions.
- Use your "NAU STUDENT EMAIL" account to receive Office of Student Financial Aid notifications.
- Be aware of all eligibility requirements and application procedures for financial aid and scholarships.
- Comply with requests for information regarding your application. Ensure that you submit all necessary documentation, if selected for verification.
- Understand and comply with the terms and conditions of all awards that you receive.
- Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress.
- Officially withdraw from NAU by contacting the Office of Student Financial Aid to begin the process if you do not attend or stop attending during a semester for which you are funded.
- If you are a student loan borrower, you must also attend exit counseling and notify your
lender(s) of your withdrawal.
- Inform the Office of Student Financial Aid of changes impacting your eligibility for financial aid, including scholarships, stipends, waivers and/or benefits assisting with educational costs received from outside agencies or an NAU department when monies are disbursed directly
to you.
- Understand and meet scholarship and/or departmental waiver renewal requirements.
- Use financial aid for NAU educational purposes only.
Sign up for Direct Deposit in order to receive your extra financial aid money (after fees are paid). Forms may be downloaded through the Office of the Bursar web site or by contacting them directly. If you do not have Direct Deposit, your extra financial aid money will be mailed in the form of a check to the 'Refund' or 'Preferred' address listed on LOUIE. Checks are not available for in-person pick up.
- Ensure your tuition and fees are paid by the fee payment deadline regardless of the status of your financial aid awards to avoid a late fee and having your classes deleted.
- Ensure that your 'Refund' and 'Preferred' address information is kept current with the university by logging into LOUIE.
- Develop a personal budget plan to maintain the lowest possible student loan debt.
