Studying Abroad

The NAU Center for International Studies provides opportunities for you to study in other countries while earning direct NAU credit.

  • You may need to apply for financial aid. To do so please complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov You will also need a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov. It is strongly suggested that you have your FAFSA completed before you leave for overseas.

  • If you already have financial aid please contact the NAU Office of Student Financial Aid to discuss how it will work with your study abroad program. Please refer to the contact information below. Also check the Study Abroad tips to review additional items you may need to know before you leave on your trip.

  • Sign a Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act or FERPA form before you leave so that someone who you trust will have the ability to discuss business on your behalf while you are overseas. This form must be turned in to the Office of the Registrar.

  • Students are encouraged to check with the Center for International Education and online for possible private donor study abroad scholarships. Any outside/private donor scholarships you receive must be reported to our office for eligibility/tracking purposes.  You may also want to fill out the Scholarship Interest Form. This form is not an application form, but allows the NAU Office of Student Financial Aid to search for additional scholarships for you.

  • Your funding eligibility as a Study Abroad participant will be the same as what your funding as an NAU campus student is. The Office of Student Financial Aid does not offer additional funding specifically for Study Abroad Programs.

  • It is your responsibility to have your school credits from the overseas university transferred one semester after the completion of your study abroad program.  If passing grades have not been posted after two semesters, you will be placed on financial aid suspension.

To determine whether the financial aid you've been awarded can be applied to your program, please contact the Program Coordinator listed below.
