Bull Creative Writing Awards Source: Charles E. Bull, a 1937 English and Education graduate at NAU. Eligibility: NAU students. Two awards of equal amounts given one, for the best poem and one for the best short story submitted to the selection committee by a graduate or undergraduate English major. Value: Two awards; amount varies Scholarship: Patricia Mapes Anderson English Scholarship Source: Established by Patricia Mapes Anderson, a 1963 graduate of NAU, as a thank-you for the great educational experience she had while attending NAU and a way to help other students achieve an education. Eligibility: Undergraduate or graduate student majoring in English; and minimum GPA of 3.0. Value: Varies Scholarship: William M. Burke Scholarship Source: Established by Dr. Jane Armstrong Woodman, winner of the 1997 Annual Fund’s Giving Giveaway, in honor of Dr. William M. Burke, Northern Arizona University Professor Emeritus, longtime instructor of English literature and widely admired colleague. Eligibility: Undergraduate English majors who have completed or who are taking Fiction Writing courses at the 300 level or above and who have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. Value: Varies  Scholarship: Mary A. Hill English Scholarship Source: Sponsored by Mary A. Hill. Contact the English Department. Eligibility: Junior or senior English major. Value: Varies  Scholarship: Downum Award Fund Source: Established in honor of Professor Garland Downum, who taught at NAU from 1944-1976. Contact the History Department. Eligibility: Ph.D. candidate in history. Value: One award of $1,700  Scholarship: G. M. Farley Scholarship Fund Source: Established in 1988 to provide scholarship support to meritorious students at NAU who have financial need. Contact the History Department. Eligibility: Full-time or part-time graduate student with a program emphasis in western history and cultures. Majors include history, anthropology, the social sciences, or journalism. Applicants must detail their interests in western studies in their student letters. Value: One award of $500  Scholarship: George and Elinor Kyte Scholarship Source: Established in 1987 by Professor George W. Kyte, who taught at NAU from 1966 until his retirement in 1985. Contact the History Department. Eligibility: Full-time, thesis-track M.A. student in history. Value: One award of $2,850  Scholarship: William H. Lyon U.S. History Award Source: Established in 1990 in recognition of professor and History Department chair, William H. Lyon, a longtime professor who served the NAU history department from 1958 until his retirement. Contact the History Department. Eligibility: Full-time upper-division undergraduate or graduate history major. Preference will be given to applicants who are conducting research focusing on the history of the trans-Mississippi West, Southwest, and the borderlands. Value: One award of $1,100  Scholarship: Francis McAllister Endowment/Transition Foundation Fellowship Source: Established in 1989 to provide financial support to meritorious students in history graduate programs at NAU. Contact the History Department. Eligibility: Full-time graduate history major who is engaged in original research focusing on the history of the southwestern United States. Preference is given to a student who is at the dissertation stage of research. Value: One award of $7,500  Scholarship: Frances McAllister Endowed Fund Source: Established by NAU friend Frances McAllister's Transition Foundation to provide financial support to meritorious students. Eligibility: A full-time graduate student in the History Department at NAU and must be directly engaged in original historical research, with preference given to applicants who have demonstrated aptitude of historical research and/or whose research will focus on the U.S. Southwest. Value: Varies Scholarship: William Roosen History Scholarship Source: Established in 1994 in memory of Arizona Regents’ Professor William J. Roosen, who taught at NAU from 1967 to 1993. Contact the History Department. Eligibility: Full-time undergraduate history major; nomination by faculty members in European history. Preference is given to applicants who show aptitude and promise for historical research. Value: One award of $500  Scholarship: William W. Tinsley Memorial Scholarship Source: Commemorates NAU professor of history and chair of the Department of Social Studies from 1927-1961. Contact the History Department. Eligibility: Full-time history major; preference given to juniors and seniors; character and scholarly ability. Value: Varies Humanities, Arts and Religion Scholarship: Dennis H. Atkin and Family Humanities Scholarship Source: Dennis H. Atkin, professor emeritus of Humanities, to encourage and promote understanding between the peoples of the United States and Asian countries. Eligibility: Full time NAU students; Humanities major. Preference for Humanities majors who minor in Asian Studies or choose an Asian Emphasis; junior or senior status; 2.5 minimum GPA; scholastic merit and/or financial need. Value: Varies   Scholarship: Lois Kellogg Duncan Scholarship Source: Established by Sri Aurobindo Center of Sedona, Arizona, in memory of Lois Kellogg Duncan. Contact the Humanities and Religious Studies Department. Eligibility: Humanities majors; scholarship; and financial need. Value: One or more awards ranging in value from $200 to $500  Scholarship: Lakeview United Methodist Church Scholarship Source: Sponsored by Lakeview United Methodist Church Foundation of Sun City, Arizona. Value: One or more awards ranging in value from $100 to $600 Modern Languages Scholarship: Borozan Memorial Modern Languages Scholarship Endowment Source: Established by Sam Stevan Borozan to honor the memory of his parents Florence Vuksanovich Borozan and Stevan Borozan and his siblings: sister, Milena, and his brothers Michael and George. Eligibility: Senior attending NAU in the fall (90 or more hours or more with > 45 hours from NAU completed); demonstrated excellence in both undergraduate research and academic achievement; minimum GPA greater than 3.5; and completion of a significant research project that is or is near to being published or has been presented at a scientific meeting. Value: $750-$1,500 Scholarship: Cowden Microbiology Scholarship Source: Cowden family endowment for microbiology students. Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students doing microbiological related research. Selection is based on SAT/ACT scores, GRE scores, GPA, letters of recommendation, community service, and statement of interest and compatibility with the interests of the Cowden Microbiology Fellowship Program. Value: $5,000 Scholarship: Chester F. "Danny" Deaver Scholarship Source: Established in 1986 by Danny and Gladys Deaver. Danny Deaver was founder of the Deaver Herbarium and a professor of botany for 41 years at NAU. Eligibility: Major in botany or biology with an applied plant science emphasis; meritorious; permanent Arizona resident; undergraduate or graduate student; and completion of at least 60 hours with > 30 hours at NAU. Must attend NAU in the Fall. Value: $650-$1,300 Scholarship: Kenneth E. Derifield Memorial Scholarship Source: Established by Granice L. Derifield in memory of her husband Kenneth, former NAU Biology faculty member. Eligibility: Junior biology major (60-89 hours completed) with at least 20 or more hours in biology courses with >30 hours at NAU, a minimum 3.4 GPA; active member of the biology honorary society, Beta Beta Beta; has performed service to the biology department in various roles; and plans to complete the senior year at NAU. Value: Varies  Scholarship: James R. Wick Scholarship Source: Established in 1992 in honor of Dr. James R. Wick, chair of Biological Sciences from 1959 to 1987. Funds are to be used to help sophomores purchase textbooks. Contact Biological Sciences Department. Eligibility: Sophomore with 30 - 40 hours applied to a degree in the Department of Biological Sciences with > 15 hours at NAU; a 3.5 minimum GPA; attending NAU full-time for semester of award; demonstrated financial need; and no other scholarship assistance for the purchase of textbooks. Value: Varies  Scholarship: Dr. James Rominger Scholarship Source: Established in honor of Dr. James Rominger, a long-time faculty member of the Biology Department of NAU and recognized authority in the area of Plant Taxonomy, in recognition of his fondness for teaching and his many contributions made to the students. Eligibility: Used to support students interested in the plant sciences. Selection will be based on merit, academic accomplishment or leadership potential. She was the only female in her class to receive a master's degree in 1912 from Columbia University in New York. Eligibility: Full time NAU students; Mathematics and/or Physics and Astronomy majors. Preference is for female students; junior or senior status; 3.0 or better GPA; and scholastic merit and/or financial need. Value: Varies Scholarship: Katie's Gift Scholarship Source: Charlotte Dunn, Katie's mother, in her daughter's memory. Established for students who have a passionate interest in astronomy. Eligibility: Majors in Astronomy or Physics with hopes of a profession in the same; undergraduate or graduate; 3.2 minimum GPA; financial need. This scholarship may be renewable. Value: Varies Scholarship: Tom and Rose Bedwell Earth Physics Scholarship Source: Sponsored by Tom and Rose Bedwell. Contact the chair of either Geology or Physics and Astronomy departments. Eligibility: Senior undergraduate students (completed 90 or more credit hours) or graduate students. Recipient(s) shall be conducting research in the earth sciences area that includes all physical, chemical, and environmental aspects of the solid earth and its atmosphere. The research may be theoretical, experimental or applied (field problems and/or library based research for unification of problems and extension of concepts) in nature. Eligibility: Student with the highest scholastic GPA in mathematics and physical science. Value: One award of $100 Scholarship: Physics and Astronomy Department Awards Source: Sponsored by Tom and Rose Bedwell. Eligibility: Major in astronomy, physics, or physical science with junior or senior standing. Value: Between $100 and $200 per award. Selection based on recommendation by the departmental scholarship committee. Scholarship: Physics and Astronomy Chair’s Scholarship Source: Sponsored by the NAU Department of Physics and Astronomy. Eligibility: A major in astronomy, physics, or physical science. Value: Varies but average $200. Normally one scholarship is awarded for one freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior. Value: Full in-state or out-of-state tuition, $650 per year book and fee allowance, and a monthly stipend of between $250-400 Scholarship: Exercise Physiology Scholarship Source: Set up through the Department of Exercise Physiology Eligibility: Senior, major in exercise science, and recommended by an Exercise Science faculty member. Preference is for students who have expressed an interest in pursuing a career in Exercise Physiology after graduation or who have participated as an undergraduate in research activities in Exercise Physiology. Value: Varies, approximately one award of $300 Scholarship: American Dental Hygienists' Association Scholarship Source: Sponsored by American Dental Hygienists’ Association. Application materials are available through the ADHA Foundation Scholarship Service, 44 North Michigan, Suite 3400, Chicago, IL 60641. All scholarship applicants must file the Financial Aid Form (FAFSA). The FAFSA form should be filed with the College Scholarship Committee by February 1. The applicant must document a financial need of at least $300. Eligibility: A certified associate's degree or bachelor's degree in dental hygiene curriculum; graduates of a certified associate degree program are eligible only if they can provide evidence of acceptance as a full-time bachelor's degree candidate. Reserve Officers Training Corps For Army ROTC, please contact the Department of Military Science Enrollments Counselor, Lt. Scholarship: Air Force College Scholarship Program Source: Air Force ROTC Eligibility: Freshmen enrolled in Air Force ROTC, 2.5 GPA and meet other Air Force qualifications. Must apply during Jun-Dec of high school senior year. Value: Tuition amount varies but includes monthly stipend from $250 to $400 Scholarship: Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (Army ROTC) Graduate Scholarships Source: Army ROTC Eligibility: Two year graduate scholarships are also available to students who will be pursing a graduate degree program at NAU. Honors Program To apply for the following scholarships, submit the Scholarship Interest Form. Scholarship: Charles and Ellie Meister Scholarship Source: To honor the founders of Arizona’s oldest Honors Program. Eligibility: Students actively enrolled in NAU’s Honors Program who have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better. Primary consideration will be given to students who have demonstrated scholarship and service to the Honors Program. Value: Number and value of awards varies yearly Scholarship: Carroll Lane and Mildred Adams-Fenton Scholarship Source: In memory of the late Carroll Lane and Mildred Adams-Fenton, distinguished authors and friends of the earth. Eligibility: Students enrolled full time and in good standing in the Honors Program; US citizen; and demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid.
