Veteran Services


The NAU Office of Veteran Services, located within the Office of Student Financial Aid, assists military veterans and their dependents who are eligible for VA educational benefits. It is the responsibility of this office to certify that the student is enrolled in courses consistent with an academic plan, which results in the completion of a degree program. Once certified, the student will receive benefits from the Department of Veteran Affairs.

Chapter 30: Active Duty
Educational Assistance Program

This chapter is for those students who have been discharged from an active duty contract in the United States Military. This is not for students whose reserve or National Guard unit has been called to active duty. In order to receive Chapter 30 benefits, you must:

  • Be admitted into a degree-seeking program at Northern Arizona University through Undergraduate Admissions or Graduate Admissions;
  • Be registered for classes;
  • Pay your tuition or have enough Financial Aid to cover your tuition;
  • Fill out the Application for VA Education Benefits, VA Form 22-1990 and turn it in to the NAU Office of Veteran Services;
  • Fill out the Educational Benefit Certification Request Form (this form must be completed every semester you wish to receive benefits), and submit it to the NAU Office of Veteran Services;
  • Have your academic advisor fill out the Unofficial Prior Credit Evaluation form and attach a list of classes needed to complete your degree, all of which must be turned in to the NAU Office of Veterans Services.

Chapter 1606: Selected Reserve
Educational Assistance Program

This chapter is for those students who are currently in a selected reserve or National Guard unit. In order to receive Chapter 1606 benefits, you must:

  • Be admitted into a degree-seeking program at Northern Arizona University through Undergraduate Admissions or Graduate Admissions;
  • Be registered for classes;
  • Pay your tuition or have enough Financial Aid to cover your tuition;
  • Fill out the Application for VA Education Benefits, VA Form 22-1990 and turn it in to the NAU Office of Veteran Services;
  • Obtain a Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) from your unit's education officer and submit it to the NAU Office of Veteran Services;
  • Fill out the Educational Benefit Certification Request Form (this form must be completed every semester you wish to receive benefits), and turn it in to the NAU Office of Veteran Services;
  • Have your academic advisor fill out the Unofficial Prior Credit Evaluation form and attach a list of classes needed to complete your degree, all of which must be turned in to the NAU Office of Veteran Services.

Chapter 35: Survivors' and Dependents'
Educational Assistance

This chapter is for survivors and dependents of military members who are receiving 100% disability from the military or became deceased while on active duty. In order to receive Chapter 35 benefits, you must:

  • Be admitted into a degree-seeking program at Northern Arizona University through Undergraduate Admissions or Graduate Admissions;
  • Be registered for classes;
  • Pay your tuition or have enough Financial Aid to cover your tuition;
  • Fill out the Application for Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance, VA Form 22-5495 and turn it in to the NAU Office of Veteran Services;
  • Fill out the Educational Benefit Certification Request Form (this form must be completed every semester you wish to receive benefits), and turn it in to the NAU Office of Veteran Services;
  • Have your academic advisor fill out the Unofficial Prior Credit Evaluation form and attach a list of classes needed to complete your degree, all of which must be turned in to the NAU Office of Veteran Services.

Chapter 31:
Vocational Rehabilitation

This chapter is for those students who are disabled and are receiving benefits through the Department of Veteran Affairs' Vocational Rehabilitation Program. In order to receive Chapter 31 benefits, you must:

  • Be admitted into a degree-seeking program at Northern Arizona University through Undergraduate Admissions or Graduate Admissions;
  • Be registered for classes;
  • Provide or have your case manager provide a VA Form 28-1905 to the NAU Office of Veteran Services;
  • Fill out the Educational Benefit Certification Request Form (this form must be completed every semester you wish to receive benefits), and submit it to the NAU Office of Veteran Services;
  • Have your academic advisor fill out the Unofficial Prior Credit Evaluation form and attach a list of classes needed to complete your degree, all of which must be turned in to the NAU Office of Veteran Services.
