WELCOME! Thank you for visiting this site! We hope you find all of the information you are looking for. If not, be sure to contact us so we can answer any questions you may have. We are a campaign committee from NAU's Health Promotions Department working in collaboration with the Coconino County Department of Health Services to increase awareness among women in Flagstaff about the role folic acid plays in preventing certain neural tube defects (NTDs) when taken prior to getting pregnant. NTDs are debilitating and sometimes lethal birth defects of the baby's brain and spine. Research has found that up to 70% of NTDs can be prevented if the woman who does get pregnant has sufficient folate levels 3 weeks before conception. A healthy diet and a daily multi-vitamin can ensure meeting the necessary amount to prevent certain NTDs! Not planning on getting pregnant? Many women aren't, however almost 50% of all pregnancies in the United states are unplanned! That's why it is so important to get the recommended amount, 400µg, of folic acid everyday. The easiest way to do that is to eat food sources naturally high in folate or fortified with folic acid. (What's the difference? Click here to find out.) Another simple way to get sufficient folic acid is to take a multi-vitamin everyday. Not only are you getting sufficient levels of folic acid to help prevent certain birth defects but you help prevent other diseases by consuming all of the important vitamins and minerals needed everyday for optimal health. Are you confident that you are getting all of the vitamins and minerals your body needs to stay healthy everyday? Not many people do, especially women! A daily multi-vitamin with folic acid can help ensure your nutrition needs are being met! Folic acid - good for you...good just in case!
