SIGI3 System Overview

SIGI3 is divided into nine sections related to making a career decision.  You can go through the entire program, or just the steps you choose.

Introduction

r Explains how to use the system

r Gives an overview of the program and recommends a pathway suited to your particular needs

 

Self-Assessment

r Evaluates your work-related values, interests and skills.  With the help of the "values" game, you can explore your work-related values in greater depth

r  Examines your career profile by fields of interest and types of activities

 

Search

r Creates a personalized list of occupations based on your work-related values, interests, skills and projected level of education

r Allows a "negative" search; i.e., removes from the list occupations with features that you want to avoid

r  Searches for occupations based on a your major field of study

 

Information

r      Learn typical job duties

r      Skills needed

r      What college classes are recommended

r      Outlook

r      Salary ranges

r      Who hires this major, etc.

r      Additional training needed

r      Compares two occupations at a time

Skills

r Lists what skills are needed in an occupation and whether you have those skills

r Examines your skills and workstyle for managerial and supervisory positions

 

Preparing

r Describes education and/or training requirements along with the major work tasks of your chosen occupations

r Includes information about graduate and professional school

r Helps you estimate your chances of completing such preparation

r Aids in selection of a college or graduate school

 

Coping

r Offers practical advice on securing financial aid, managing time, finding day-care facilities, job relocation, working at home, getting credit for learning through experience, and common worries

 

Deciding

r Helps you weigh the potential rewards and chances for success in your chosen careers

r Allows you to evaluate up to three career choices at a time

 

Next Steps

r Guides you in setting short-range goals and outlines steps recommended to achieve those goals

r Suggests how you can develop new skills, build a network of contacts, write a resume and cover letter, and apply for jobs

 

Printing Results

r Allows you to print your work as you go through the program.  You may want to schedule a meeting with a career counselor to review your results.
