NAU's Early Academic Alert and Retention System
GPS is a multi-tiered guidance system designed to promote students' academic success and retention. Instructors can use GPS to document their student communication, supplement their resources, support student success, and provide instructor feedback.
For the last two years, more than 50 NAU faculty, staff, and students have collaborated to design NAU’s new academic early alert/retention tool. We are excited to announce that Grade Performance Status (GPS) is piloting Fall 2009! GPS is a one-of-a-kind multi-tiered guidance system designed to promote students' academic success and retention.
GPS is available through the Faculty Center homepage to all instructors who have students in the GPS population. Updates are sent directly to the student using NAU email and communicate the instructor’s assessment of a student’s progress and attendance. In addition, the student’s Update email contains links to NAU’s campus and online resources. Instructor communication is automatically recorded in the student’s online advising record in LOUIE, allowing advisors to conduct outreach and provide additional support.
The Update periods coincide with key drop/withdrawal dates during the semester, giving students and advisors important feedback that will help students make timely decisions about their enrollment in classes that will help them protect and manage their GPA. GPS Updates include Positive Feedback, Attendance, Grade, Academics, and Resources.
Instructors should check for the GPS icon
on their class rosters , as not all students are included in the Fall 2009 pilot of GPS. We invite you to assist in the continued development by participating and providing feedback during this critical pilot year. It is the intention that GPS become a valuable tool for all NAU instructors and students.
