It's OK to be undecided! Being undecided is not unusual; it's common. Some students are coming to NAU with clear academic and career goals, some come open-minded, and some come decided and quickly become undecided. Even a few Gateway advisors explored many paths and changed their minds many times before finding what was right for them. In choosing a major, it is important to do the following: 1) Find out about yourself. What do you like or dislike? What values are important to you? What do you have a passion about? What skills and abilities can you tap into? Knowing yourself helps to guide you on your path. 2) Explore the possibilities. Talk to people in different fields to see what they do and how they got there. You'll be surprised to see that your major may not always reflect the job you end up choosing. In fact, it is not uncommon for people to have at least 5-8 careers in their lifetime. The Gateway has several tools to assist you. 3) Evaluate your options. Using the information you have about yourself, evaluate how each option fits into your goals. 4) Make the choice. Realize that most employers are not looking for a specific degree, but are looking for specific knowledge, attitude, and personal fit. The skills and experiences you have in college will transfer to the work world.
