The NAU Liberal Studies program is designed to help students develop critical skills necessary for moving into careers and taking leadership roles in society.

Students complete 35 units of Liberal Studies which include University Colloquium (3 units) and Foundation requirements in English Composition (4 units) and Mathematics (3 units).

Students select an additional 25 units of approved Distribution coursework in the areas of Lab Science (4 units), Aesthetic and Humanistic Inquiry (3-6 units), Cultural Understanding (3-6 units) Science and Applied Science (3-6 units), Social and Political Worlds (3-6 units).

Please note that Distribution courses must be outside of the academic discipline of the student's major and cannot share the same prefix as major coursework.  For example, anthropology majors may not count any ANT courses as a Liberal Studies Distribution courses.   This same policy does not hold true for courses in satisfying requirements for a minor.
