Placement Exams

Unless otherwise noted, contact the Testing Center with questions or to schedule an appointment to take any of the exams below.

Math and English Placement:

NAU uses your SAT/ACT scores to determine which math and English course is most appropriate for you. Please check the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Department of English websites for the most up-to-date list of scores and appropriate courses.

Students with no SAT/ACT scores must take the ACCUPLACER exam(s) which can be scheduled through the Testing Center.

CLEP:

You can receive credit for what you already know by earning qualifying scores on any one of seventeen College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams accepted for credit at Northern Arizona University. The Testing Center at NAU administers the CLEP exams by appointment.

College/Departmental Challenge Exams:

Currently enrolled NAU students may take Challenge Exams for credit. Challenge Exams are locally prepared by NAU faculty. The amount of units awarded varies with each exam. Visit the Testing Center for information about specific Challenge Exams offered at NAU.

English Challenge Exam:

This is a written test of student ability to critically read and write academic prose. Students qualify for the exam either by their standardized test scores or by transferring to NAU with English 101, or its equivalent, with a grade of B or higher. The exam is administered by the English Department.

Music Theory Placement (RON):

If you are interested in becoming a music major at NAU you will take this test as well as audition for the program. The test is administered by the School of Music.

Spanish Placement:

This test is offered free online for students unsure of which level of Spanish to take. Your results will determine which Spanish course is most appropriate. This test can be taken online through the Modern Languages Program website. http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~kbc/placement/placement.html

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language):

TOEFL evaluates the potential success of an individual to use and understand Standard American English at a college level. It is required for non-native applicants at NAU. The test is administered world-wide by the Education Testing Service (ETS). For more information on this test please visit the ETS website. http://www.ets.org/toefl/
