My research interests have evolved into
two separate directions. My main focus during my tenure at NAU has
centered on the late Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary section on the
Colorado Plateau and vicinity. I study both the stratigraphy and
sedimentology of these rocks in order to comprehend the sedimentary and
tectonic settings of this fabulous section. Because many of these rocks
are continental or very near-shore in origin, I have specialized in
aeolian, fluvial, and sabkha depositional systems and especially the
dynamic interactions of these systems as dramatically exposed across the
Colorado Plateau. I like to study both the large scale and small scale
aspects of these deposits. My second direction was spawned by my
interest in the paleogeography that resulted from the above studies. I
have assimilated much data on regional and global paleogeography in
order to construct realistic maps of the Earth through time. This has
provided me with a strong background in regional and global plate
tectonics and how plate tectonic events control paleogeography. Examples
of both of my research directions are posted on my
website. |
