Why fitness is important

Physical activity and exercise impact your body and mind in many ways. The three body systems that are most influenced by exercise are the cardiovascular (heart), pulmonary (lungs), and muskuloskeletal (muscles) systems. Read more about exercise physiology.

Being physically active can help you maintain or improve your health, reduce stress, and feel better every day. More specifically, research has shown that regular physical activity can result in:

  • Lower stress and anxiety
  • Reduced muscular tension
  • Improved work performance and attitudes (e.g., fewer errors)
  • Enhanced self-concept and self-esteem
  • Maintenance of an attractive appearance
  • Higher resistance against disease, such as the common cold
  • Feelings of success in physical activities and sports
  • Decrease in blood sugar levels
  • Increased production of endorphins, which are brain chemicals that can enhance your mood
