Introduction
Many students experience symptoms of depression during their college time. According to a large national student survey conducted by the American College Health Association in 2006, 93% of students felt overwhelmed at times, 60% felt hopeless at times, and 425% reported that they experienced feelings of depression to the point of having trouble functioning, and about 9% had seriously considered committing suicide.
The National Comorbidity Survey shows that about 8% of young adults suffer from major depression. In the majority of cases several episodes of depression occur over time and cause significant role impairment, including attempted suicide.
Suicide is the number 3 leading cause of mortality for 15 to 24 year-olds.
The Healthy Campus web site provides resources and links that can help students understand how depression affects students and what to do about it.
