Honors 190/Fall 03

First Informal Assignment

This assignment is a “miniature”analysis of Letters from Yellowstone.  It is designed to see what kind of writers you are right now and what our classes will want to work on this semester, in order to help you hone your skills. For this assignment, please read the following prompt carefully; then re-read portions of the novel that help elucidate this prompt; then write a coherent essay that addresses the issue(s) raised in the prompt. Use what you have learned in your previous writing and English classes to write the best essay that you can, paying  close attention to your introduction and thesis, paragraph structure, development of ideas (e.g., analysis and logic), supporting evidence (quotations), style (e.g., word choice and sentence structure), and mechanics (grammar, spelling, and punctuation). Good luck, and we look forward to reading your essays!

In an epistolary novel – a novel written in a “correspondence” or “letter” format – we learn about particular characters by examining the various ways in which these characters write to other characters (see question 2 in the study guide portion of the book, page 9). What do we learn about one of the main characters, A.E. Bartram, through her letters, specifically the style, tone, and content of her letters?
