DIS 201 INTRODUCTION TO DISABILITY (3)
Introduction to Disability explores the
disability experience from the perspective of the person with a disability, from
how society views disabilities and considers the relationship between the two.

DIS 303 PERSPECTIVES ON DISABILITIES (3)
This course explores the personal, cultural, social, political, and economic
experiences of persons with disabilities in global and national contexts. Letter
grade only. Prerequisite: Junior Status or higher SPW
DIS 407 INTRODUCTION TO PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES OF FAMILY SUPPORT,
SELF-DETERMINATION AND DISABILITY (3)
Introduction to the principles and practices of disability awareness, family
support and self-determination with applications for multi-disciplinary
professions. Letter grade only.
DIS 408 FIELDWORK EXPERIENCE (1-12)
Individualized supervised field experience in an appropriate agency or
organization. Fee required. Pass-fail only. May be repeated for a maximum of 12
units.
DIS 417 DISABILITY LAW AND EDUCATION (3)
This course covers legal issues dealing with IDEA, inclusion, LRE, discipline,
AT, Section 504, Title II of the ADA, and other disability related laws.
Co-convenes with DIS 517. Letter grade only.
DIS 418 LAW OF DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION (3)
This course presents key legislation pertaining to individuals with disabilities
including the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 and other related
laws and their impact on employment, housing, transportation, and independent
living. No prerequisites. Co-convenes with DIS 518. Letter grade only.
DIS 485 UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH (1-6)
Individualized original research under the supervision of a research adviser.
Pass-fail only. May be repeated for up to 12 units of credit.
DIS 497 INDEPENDENT STUDY (1-6)
Individualized approach to select topics by guided reading and critical
evaluation. Pass-fail only. No repeat limit.
DIS 499 CONTEMPORARY DEVELOPMENTS (1-3)

DIS 505 DISABILITIES AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE LIFESPAN: AN INTRODUCTION

Provides basic information about disabilities and related assistive technologies
that may assist individuals with disabilities.
DIS 507 ADVANCED PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES OF FAMILY SUPPORT,
SELF-DETERMINATION AND DISABILITY (3)
In-depth research and exploration through independent and group work into the
principles and practices of disability awareness, family support and
self-determination with applications for multi-disciplinary professions. Letter
grade only.
DIS 517 DISABILITY LAW AND EDUCATION (3)
This course covers legal issues dealing with IDEA, inclusion, LRE, discipline,

DIS 519 INTRODUCTION TO POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT (3)
This course is designed to provide students with an overview of positive
behavior support (PBS) that will help them understand and help students with
disabilities and behavior challenges. Cross-listed with ESE 585. Letter grade
only.
DIS 521 ASSESSMENT AND EFFECTIVE PRACTICES IN ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY (3)
Provides students with knowledge and skills in assessing the need for assistive
technology and reviews current effective practices for providing assistive
technology services. Letter grade only. Prerequisite: DIS 505
DIS 523 ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS: POSITIONING, MOBILITY,
MOUNTING, AND CONTROL INTERFACES (3)
Provides fundamental knowledge of strategies for positioning, mobility, mounting
and control interfaces, and the assistive technology tools that are used to
enable effective outcomes for persons with disabilities. Throughout the course
basic processes, laws, and funding sources that assist in the implementation of
assistive technology for positioning, mobility and/or access are addressed.

DIS 524 ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS: LITERACY (3)
Provides specific knowledge and skills necessary to implement assistive
technology tools and strategies for individuals who struggle to gain the skills
of reading, writing, and literacy. This course addresses a range of ages, skill
levels, and disabilities. Letter grade only.
DIS 525 ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY APPLICATION: COMMUNICATION IMPAIRMENT (3)
Provides specific knowledge and skills necessary to implement augmentative and
alternative communication strategies with individuals with disabilities. May be
repeated for a total of 6 hours of credit. Letter grade only. Prerequisite: DIS
505 or permission of instructor
DIS 526 APPLICATIONS OF ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY FOR SCHOOL-AGED
INDIVIDUALS: LOW INCIDENCE/SEVERE DISABILITIES (3)
Develops the specific skills and device knowledge necessary to provide assistive
technology services to persons with low incidence or severe disabilities in a
variety of settings. Letter grade only. Prerequisite: DIS 505 or permission of
instructor
DIS 527 APPLICATIONS OF ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY FOR ADULTS (3)
Develops the specific skills and device knowledge necessary to provide assistive
technology services to adults with low incidence or severe disabilities in a
variety of settings. Letter grade only. Prerequisite: DIS 505 or permission of
instructor
DIS 528 ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY APPLICATION: SENSORY IMPAIRMENT (3)
Provides specific knowledge and skills necessary to implement assistive
technology tools and strategies for individuals with sensory disabilities. This
course addresses the sensory impairment areas of hearing, vision, and dual
sensory impairment. Letter grade only. Prerequisite: DIS 505 or permission of
instructor
DIS 529 ADV APPLICATIONS IN POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT (3)
This course builds on students' knowledge of PBS through problem-based learning.
Students work in teams where they will solve several case examples of
children/adults with disabilities and challenging behavior. Throughout the
course, new content will be taught via online readings and texts. Students must
develop new functional behavioral assessment (FBA) tools, interpret difficult
assessments, and design advanced PBS plans. Letter grade only. Prerequisite: ESE
585 or DIS 519
DIS 539 CONSULTATION AND COLLABORATION IN POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT
(3)
This course prepares students to consult with teams responsible for the
education, habilitation and support of people with behavior/learning challenges.
Previous knowledge of effective teaching/behavior change strategies is used to
help teams develop, implement and evaluate positive behavior support (PBS)
plans. Students combine their knowledge of PBS with the missions of various
service providers to help them find common ground. Letter grade only.
Prerequisite: DIS 529 and ESE 554
DIS 549 METHODS IN EARLY INTENSIVE BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTION (3)
Introduction to Early Intensive Behavioral Interventions (EIBI) trains
individuals to enhance the learning of young children with Autism Spectrum
Disorders (ASD) and other developmental disabilities. EIBI incorporates
principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA) such as reinforcement, shaping,
prompting, facing, and measurement of behavior. The course consists of on-line
lessons, readings, quizzes, discussions, recording data from videos, and a
project assignment. Letter grade only.
DIS 559 VERBAL AND SOCIAL BEHAVIOR OF CHILDREN WITH AUTISM AND OTHER
DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES (3)
This online course covers: 1) How Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) affects
development of verbal and social behavior; 2) Research and effective practices
to enhance the learning of young children with ASD; and 3) Applied Behavior
Analysis. Included are: online lessons, readings, quizzes, group discussions,
and applied projects. Students will assess a child's specific skills and design
interventions accordingly. Letter grade only. Prerequisite: DIS 549
DIS 593 DISABILITY STUDIES WORKSHOP (1-3)
Topical instruction involving exchange of ideas, practical methods, skills, and
principles. You may count up to 6 hours of 593 toward your graduate program..
Pass-fail only.
DIS 599 CONTEMPORARY DEVELOPMENTS (1-3)
Examines recent trends and investigations in a selected area of a particular
field of study. May be offered no more than three times before being submitted
for a permanent course number. May be repeated for credit. Letter grade only.
DIS 608 FIELDWORK EXPERIENCE (1-12)
Field experiences in applied and service delivery settings. You participate in a
supervised training experience according to your interests and the availability
of training sites. Pass-fail only.
