The Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports of Arizona program was developed to address the issue of safe schools, and is a collaborative effort between the Arizona Department of Education, Arizona State University, University of Arizona, and Northern Arizona University. It is supported by the Center for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports at the University of Oregon.
The primary purpose of PBISAz is to establish a comprehensive and focused statewide effort to improve the capacity of educators, administrators and education professionals to address their specific school discipline needs and enable the development of positive teaching and learning environments.
The foundation of PBISAz is grounded in research on successful school change and School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS). Further, in contrast to most top-down professional development approaches, PBISAz uses an ongoing strategic planning process to identify professional development needs specific to the context of each school.
