NAU budget discussions begin
Discussions about next year's budget for Northern Arizona University began in earnest Friday with the release of budget recommendations by Gov. Janet Napolitano. However, negotiations will continue over the next several months, and a final budget is not expected until late May or early June when voted on by the Legislature and signed by the governor. Date set for university system redesign recommendations
It has been relatively quiet over the past several months as the work group assigned by the Arizona Board of Regents to study the proposed redesign of the state's university system has been meeting and collecting information. But that will soon change as the group is expected to announce recommendations for redesign options on Feb. 23. READ MORE…


New science lab in the offing
Construction of a new science lab on north campus, across from the Wettaw biology and biochemistry building, is scheduled to begin this summer. The new building is part of an overall master plan to renew and renovate science facilities on north campus. READ MORE...


Donation crowns dental clinic
NAU's Dental Hygiene Clinic has undergone major renovations, thanks to a $200,000 donation from the Del E. Webb Foundation and help from other dental profession groups. READ MORE...


Skydome scores new board
Athletics fans attending events at the Skydome noticed some big changes last week. A modern scoreboard system, including instant replay, pre-produced animation and video features, video clips and "all of the other interactive bells and whistles are there," said Kent Haslam, associate athletic director for external operations.


Campus Heights to be razed
Demolition of the one-story Campus Heights apartments in central campus will begin Monday, making way for new student housing. Replacement of that section of Campus Heights has been part of the master plan for campus improvements. READ MORE...

Patty J. Horn, who has served as executive director of NAU's Arizona K-12 Center since its inception in 1999, has stepped down to devote herself full time to working with induction programs for beginning teachers. READ MORE...

Applied Indigenous Studies launches brownbag series
NAU's Department of Applied Indigenous Studies is launching a series of lunchtime lectures by James Peshlakai, traditional knowledge instructor. Navajo Winter Stories starts Wednesday, Jan. 26, from noon to 1 p.m. in the hogan, which is located just south of the Southwest Forest Science Complex. The first lecture is "Navajo Oral History from the First World to Pre-Columbus." READ MORE...

Students should apply now for financial aid
The Office of Student Financial Aid is asking faculty and staff to remind students that if they need financial aid for next year, they should apply now, by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2005-2006 school year. The application can be completed on-line here. If students have any questions, they can visit the Financial Aid office on the second floor of the Gammage building.


State now offering coverage to volunteers, students
The state of Arizona is now providing accident insurance coverage to "registered" volunteers who are doing work for NAU and students while traveling in the United States for university sponsored programs. The plan will reimburse for eligible expenses that are not payable by the individual's healthcare plan or other insurance plan providing reimbursement for medical expenses. READ MORE...


Pancake breakfast, silent auction to benefit former professor's family
Friends of Don Bendel, a regents professor of art who retired after 30 years at NAU, will hold a pancake breakfast and silent auction Sunday, Jan. 23, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 3430 N. Fourth St., Flagstaff. The Bendels have been using their savings for medical expenses related to the illness of their son, John, as well as the illness and death of their son-in-law, Eric Anderson.
