NAU Calendar of Events

Yuma commencement
The Arizona Western College/NAU-Yuma commencement ceremony will be held on Friday, May 13, at 8 p.m. in the Margaret Page Amphitheater in Yuma. The commencement ceremony will be preceded by an Honors Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. in the campus gymnasium. Christina Palacios, next chair of the Arizona Board of Regents, will represent ABOR, and Liz Grobsmith, NAU provost, will represent President John Haeger at the ceremonies.


Convocations

Two convocations will be held Thursday, May 12, to recognize the achievements of Hispanic and Native American graduating students

Hispanic convocation: Thursday, May 12, 4 p.m., Prochnow Auditorium
The Hispanic Convocation Ceremony celebrates the achievements of our Hispanic graduates from NAU and the Flagstaff high schools. The convocation emphasizes cultural traditions and provides an opportunity to bring family and friends together. Leadership awards are presented to outstanding Graduating NAU students and the Cesar Chavez Leadership award to graduating seniors from the Flagstaff high schools. The event is open to the campus and Flagstaff community. Contact: Hilda Ladner, (928) 523-5656.

Native American convocation: Thursday, May 12, 7 p.m., Ardrey Auditorium
The Native American Convocation and Awards Ceremony recognizes the achievements of our Native American graduates. The convocation emphasizes Native American traditions and provides an opportunity to bring family, friends and tribal leadership together. Graduates dress in their respective tribal attire. Awards are presented to Outstanding Graduating Senior and Graduate Student. Special awards are presented to a staff and faculty member who has demonstrated their commitment to Native American students and programs. The event is open to the campus community. Three men and a pact

The Common Reading Program is looking for discussion leaders for The Pact: Three Young Men Make a Promise and Fulfill a Dream (2002). As in years past, faculty and staff are invited to lead an hour-long conversation with a small group of students who have been assigned the book before they come to NAU.

NAU grad selected for Presidential Management Fellowship
Gary MacLellan, who graduates this week with a master's degree in chemistry, has been tapped for a two-year paid fellowship at the National Institute of Justice—the research and development branch of Department of Justice—as part of the Presidential Management Fellowship Program. He is the only graduate from an Arizona university this year to be in the program, and will head to Washington. D.C., this summer.

In lieu of lunch, see treasures at NAU Art Museum
The NAU Art Museum has brought out a selection of Hispanic works from the Permanent Collection, featuring seldom seen pieces by Picasso, Diego Rivera, Salvador Dali, Francesco Goya and others. Kathy Battali, program coordinator of the museum, found one of the pieces, an etching by Dali, tucked away in a file drawer and knew it was time to bring it and the other pieces out.

NAU marketing grad walks tall for cancer cure
While thousands of people were scrambling to reach the Post Office doors before they were locked up on the night of April 15, Jessica Celentano was standing at the top of Northern Arizona University's Walkup Skydome, watching more than a thousand NAU students scramble around the track, raising money for cancer research.

Axer Auction planned for May 21
NAU's 15th annual Axer Auction to raise money for athletic scholarships is Saturday, May 21 at Rolle Activity Center. The event begins at 5 p.m. and includes dinner by Outback Steakhouse and the opportunity to bid on custom-fit Ping golf clubs, a hot air balloon trip, travel packages with the NAU football and basketball teams and other items. Tickets are $25 and are available from the Lumberjack Athletic Association Board Members or by calling Linda Stromberg at (928) 523-7805. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door. All proceeds from the Axer Auction benefit the NAU Athletics Scholarship funds.


Movin' too fast? Slow down with these courses
Whether you have half a day or a long weekend to spend, NAU's Master of Liberal Studies Program and Program in Community, Culture and Environment are offering a series of workshops and mini-courses about culture, nature and community life on the Colorado Plateau. The workshops are open to the public and students alike. Space is limited in most workshops, and many offer discounts for early registration.

HRM's Arizona Hospitality Research and Resource Center reveals Grand Canyon visitors' profile, experiences and attitudes

  • Contrary to popular wisdom, the Grand Canyon is not the primary destination for most visitors, but is an important stop in longer regional trips.
  • Visitors significantly mention "naturalness" as one of their primary satisfiers and expectations of the Canyon.
  • Of the communities Grand Canyon tourists visited, Flagstaff ranked first, with nearly 41 percent of visitors stopping here. Second and third place were held by Las Vegas and Sedona.

Youth needed for garden project
Kyrie Thompson, an NAU master's student in applied anthropology, is looking for high-school students to participate in Flagstaff Youth Gardens, a project that teaches young people about sustainable agriculture and the natural world. Flagstaff Youth Gardens also participates at the local farmers' market and MNA's heritage markets. Children of NAU faculty or staff participated last year.     "I think the find is highly significant," said David Gillette, curator of paleontology at the Museum of Northern Arizona and a geologist at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. "The fact that we have Early Cretaceous specimens in North America throws open the question of where they originated."

  • NAU Alum inducted into Reading Hall of Fame
    Victoria Purcell-Gates, internationally recognized reading authority and advisor on Riverdeep's Destination Reading series, is the newest member of the Reading Hall of Fame. Purcell-Gates received her B.S. in English Education from Northern Arizona University.
