NAU Symphony Orchestra's final concert of the season performs the Ibert Saxophone Concerto with soloist Josh Meyers, the Villa-Lobos Soprano Saxophone Fantasia with soloist Dannel Espinoza, "Elegie" from the Tchaikovsky String Serenade, Piazzola's Oblivion arranged for strings by Joel DiBartolo, and Ravel's Bolero.
Note: Espinoza and Meyers are members of the NAU Saxophone quartet, whose sound you can hear here.

Memorial fund established in memory of Jim Sedillo
A memorial scholarship fund in memory of Jim Sedillo, a long-time supporter of Northern Arizona University, has been established through the NAU Foundation.

Course fees denied; redesign plan approved
Citing the political climate, a flawed process for setting tuition and fees and inadequate state financial aid, the Arizona Board of Regents denied requests from the three universities to increase undergraduate course and program fees.

Seniors win Gold Axe, President's Prizes

Each semester NAU recognizes seniors who have made outstanding contributions to the university in academic performance, service and activities. The seniors who are selected for their contributions receive the prestigious Gold Axe Award; from those, a few are also selected for the President's Prize. The recognition is a joint effort among the Office of Student Life, ASNAU and the Alumni office.

NAU Live! wins first-ever broadcast award for
'Drug Bust'
Grayhmn Jennings and Morgan Myer, students in the School of Communication, were on their way to work at NAU Live!, the student-produced news broadcast, one morning when they came upon a drug bust happening near the campus. They called their adviser, assistant professor Gloria Horning, to see if they could cover it. Good thing they did. The students have won first place for Television Spot News Reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists. The story, "Drug Bust," was produced during the 2003/04 school year and will soon be on www.NAULive.com.

Teams of student engineers celebrated the culmination of the past year's work when they presented their senior engineering design projects at last week's College of Engineering and Natural Sciences Capstone Conference in NAU's du Bois Center.

Martin-Springer Institute honors those with
moral courage
NAU's Martin-Springer Institute last week honored a group of students and teachers at Sinagua High School for having the moral courage to make a difference in their schools and communities. The Martin-Springer Institute annually gives out the Moral Courage Awards, which reflect the courage of the institute's founder Doris Martin, a survivor of the Holocaust who now speaks about her experiences with middle- and high- school students.

  • Forestry research goes global
    Foresters who've been battling record wildfires in Spain will be getting a little help from Northern Arizona University. Associate forestry professor Pete Fulé is headed to the pine forests outside of Barcelona to aid in determining what some of Spain's forests looked like historically with low-level fires, before regions were settled or logged.
