| Be first to celebrate the Fourth
Monday is the Fourth of July, the United States' 229th birthday. Enjoy the parade in downtown Flagstaff and maybe barbecue a hot dog or two. But don't show up for work—it's a holiday for most of you, and the university will be closed.
*Due to the July 4 holiday, next week's issue of Inside NAU will be published on Thursday, July 7.

Parking permits available online
Parking Services is accepting applications and payment for the 2005-06 parking permits. Go to www.nau.edu/parking to purchase your permit. Benefit-eligible employees can use payroll deductions for either six or 16 pay periods--which will save money because the deduction comes from pre-tax dollars. Online applications received before Aug. 1 will be mailed to your home. After Aug. 1, you will need to pick up your decal at Parking Services, building 91.
Asphalt repairs to continue through July 18
As part of its campus improvements, Capital Assets and Services will continue with asphalt repairs through July 18, according to its tentative schedule. Repairs include patching, paving, repairing cracks and sealing on main thoroughfares and several parking lots. University Drive, Knoles Drive, McCreary Drive and San Francisco Street and some parking areas are undergoing work. The tentative schedule calls for striping on July 18.

Creek returned to natural beauty
For now, Northern Arizona University will be watching the creek to see how the life in and around the creek responds to the increased water flow now that Arizona Public Service officially closed the Irving and Childs power plants. The creek's restoration provides the opportunity to learn whether a man-made restoration can be effective, said Bill Auberle, director of Engineering Programs at NAU. Auberle has been working as the head of research and coordination of Fossil Creek for NAU. "This is part of a once in a lifetime [opportunity] because we don't see deconstruction and reconstruction of ecosystem," he said.
