Newie Louie unveiled

Jim Fallis, right, NAU athletic director, speaks with reporters after unveiling the newly redesigned Louie the Lumberjack mascot at a press conference last week in du Bois Conference Center. "As you become a part of the Lumberjack family, you begin to realize just how much meaning the ax has," he told a crowd of about 70 students, staff and media. "You begin to understand the value and the history and the tradition of the Lumberjacks and the ax....The ax reflects on the workman-like mentality of our student-athletes and the success that we want to bring to the program." |

Lumberjacks among leaders in Maine event
NAU Athletics is scoring big at camp.
The Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks at Camp Manitou in southwestern Maine are among the leaders in the camp's College League.
The camp is located in Oakland, Maine, not too far from Winslow, Rome, China and Belgrade.
Each year at the summer-long camp, campers divide into 60- to 70-person teams to compete in Olympic-type events with each team choosing a college mascot.
Because one team's "dean," Vaughn Beckwith, was thought to resemble a lumberjack, the team chose NAU as its model.
The campers' parents have ordered hats, jerseys and T-shirts from the NAU Bookstore, totaling close to $1,700 in sales.

Scientists: If prairie dogs vanish, other species will follow
The Gunnison's prairie dog is one of five known prairie-dog species, and all are losing the battle for habitat and survival in the West, scientists say. "I think if they don't receive some help, in the not-too-distant future all five species will go extinct," said prairie-dog biologist Con Slobodchikoff of Northern Arizona University. "That in turn will affect a whole lot of other species that depend on them."

Old Louie gets the ax
Louie the Lumberjack has had a makeover. With mountain peaks behind him, he stands up straight and grips a big, yellow-handled ax with his left hand. "This was ... the next step in our strategic marketing plan for the entire university," said Dr. M.J. McMahon, NAU's executive vice president. "The original rebranding effort did not include athletics and there's a reason for that, because there are very different companies, ideas, concepts (and) different people that need to be involved in that rebranding process."
