Study may help slay 'Yellow Monster'
Research pioneers understanding of uranium toxicity
Low-grade uranium ore is nicknamed "yellowcake" for its color and powdered consistency. The Navajos have another name: Leetso, or "yellow monster." Northern Arizona University biochemist Diane Stearns and her Navajo students are working to help slay the yellow monster with new discoveries about uranium.

University Planning Council seeks campus input
The university's Strategic Planning Council, responsible for developing such institutional planning documents as the mission, goals and five-year plan, has scheduled 19 open sessions to gain input from the campus community about proposed changes to the university's planning documents.

African experience comes to campus
African singers, dancers and drummers from Zimbabwe, Ghana and Kenya will stage a free performance at 6:30 p.m. March 1 at the du Bois Center Ballroom as part of "Free to Dance: An African Experience." The event, presented by the African Student Association and Black Student Union, will also include a number of authentic African dishes for guests to sample.

Bookstore to halt computer sales for a day
The Northern Arizona University Bookstore computer sales department will be closed for inventory on Feb. 28, although the rest of the Bookstore will be open. The computer sales department will reopen March 1.
Students to stay 'Up 'til Dawn' celebrating fund-raising accomplishments
Students at Northern Arizona University will pull an all-nighter on Saturday, but this time they won't be studying. Instead they will be celebrating their fund-raising efforts that brought in $28,235 over the last five months through Up 'til Dawn, a program dedicated to the lifesaving work of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

 NAU student an academic all-star
On Jan. 30, Robert Buscaglia got the letter he was expecting. His roommate was not home, so Buscaglia, a junior at Northern Arizona University, went to the office of his apartment complex manager so he wouldn't have to open the letter alone. It was from USA Today, and in it was the news that Buscaglia had been named to USA Today's All-USA College Academic third team, ranking him among the top 60 students in the nation. He is one of two Arizona students to receive the honor this year.

Arizonans invited to design coin
About one in four Arizonans said they would like to see the Canyon on the state quarter, making it the most popular feature mentioned, according to a 2005 survey by the Social Research Laboratory at Northern Arizona University. Second was the saguaro, named by 19 percent of respondents. James Bowie, a research specialist who headed the survey and a member of the Arizona State Quarter Commission, said he would like to see a simple design, though 64 percent of respondents preferred two or more elements.

NAU picked by US Olympic Committee to participate in awareness effort
The U.S. Olympic Committee has chosen Northern Arizona University to participate in a national effort to promote awareness of Olympic and Paralympic sports. The other five participants are based in Alabama, Illinois, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Texas. They will host committee initiatives and events, and work with schools in their states to educate the public. NAU, based in Flagstaff, is one of nine official Olympic training sites in the country. Since it was created in 1994, NAU's Center for High Altitude Training has worked with Flagstaff to host international Olympic sports teams. More than 4,500 athletes and coaches have trained at the center.
