Salary increases reflected in last week's paycheck
NAU employees saw the effects of two recent salary increases in their most recent paycheck. Both the $1,650 annual raise approved by the state Legislature for all state employees, as well as merit increases that were calculated based on salaries prior to state's raise, were reflected on the March 31 paycheck.

Because it was the third paycheck of the month, employees also saw a higher take-home amount because there are no voluntary deductions on that paycheck.

For background on the salary increases, including frequently asked questions, click here.

NAU in the news

Instant protest - young activists make most of today's wired world
While teens using gadgets to organize is a new phenomenon for Hispanic organizers, the technology itself isn't fueling students' activism, experts said. It's the proposed legislation that students view as anti-immigrant or anti-Latino that is sparking a renewed sense of passion among Hispanic youths, they added. "A lot of Latino students are first- or second-generation Americans, and if these laws pass, it will directly affect their parents or their grandparents," said Joel Olson, assistant professor of political science at Northern Arizona University. That high school students have taken the lead over college students on immigration protests has caught many by surprise, Olson said. But it shouldn't, he added, because unlike most of the state's urban high schools, Arizona universities are still largely Anglo, so the issue isn't as pressing. "We're not used to seeing high school students act, so when we do, we're shocked," Olson said.

Health STAR Program prepares medical professionals for Rez
The Health STAR Program (Successful Transition Academic Readiness) is a Northern Arizona University program designed to assist ethnic minority high school graduates in the entrance of college health career programs. Aleticia Tijerina, program coordinator, said, 'The program is a bridge for retention. Students learn about college and meet professors. They enter this program straight out of high school, and our students have told me what they like best about it is meeting other students. For many of her Native American students, this is the first time they have lived off the reservation." 'Students will work with the Native American Cancer Research Partnership (NACRP), sponsored by the national Cancer Institute's Minority Institute/Cancer Center Program. The program is administered jointly by NAU and the Arizona Cancer Center at the University of Arizona. Research projects focus on the relationship of environmental toxins, particularly uranium. Participation in these seminars will provide STAR students an opportunity to learn in a teaching laboratory or to conduct field research.
