It's been six years in the making, and GEAR UP is gearing up for a celebration.
Commencement heats up
NAU-Yuma

As the setting sun cooled the desert on May 19, the festivities were just heating up at NAU-Yuma, which was celebrating 300 of its graduates who received their bachelor's or master's degrees. The ceremony was held at the Margaret Page Amphitheater on the Arizona Western College campus.
Rene F. Pack, a graduate receiving her bachelor of applied science degree in computer technology, was the NAU-Yuma commencement speaker. Pack plans to earn a master's degree and eventually a doctorate in her field.
Liz Grobsmith, NAU provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, along with Regent Fred Boice and Anna Marie Aldaz, interim executive director of NAU-Yuma, conferred the degrees.
"Commencement went very well," Aldaz said. "We are proud of our graduates and of our fine university."
More than 5,000 friends and family attended the ceremony, which was held jointly with AWC and the University of Arizona. |

 Saguaro tops state-quarter proposals
So who needs another two-bit saguaro image? Apparently, people in Tucson, said James I. Bowie of Northern Arizona University and member of Gov. Janet Napolitano's 22-member Arizona State Quarter Commission. The group is heading the search for the design of Arizona's state quarter to be released by the U.S. Mint in 2008. Coins with the design will be circulated for 30 years—to honor the state and make money for the U.S. Treasury.

Stopping TB in its tracks
A Northern Arizona University team of scientists has received a patent for a technique that could help control the spread of tuberculosis, the second deadliest infectious disease among adults worldwide. The team developed a new system for identifying different genetic strains of the TB-causing bacterium, Mycobacterium tuberculosum. 'The technique provides a faster, cheaper and more precise method of testing for these strains,' said Paul Keim, NAU Regents Professor and the Cowden Endowed Chair in Microbiology, the lead member of the three-person NAU team.
