NAU students lend a hand to New Orleans community
NAU students lend a hand to New Orleans community
Matthew Wayne Jachowski, junior criminal justice major, displays a muddy shoe among the filthy debris still to be cleared from a home he helped refurbish in St. Bernard's Parish, New Orleans last month. Jachowski was one of 11 NAU student volunteers who spent a week in May with New Orleans Habitat for Humanity as part of its St. Bernard Recovery Project. The project coordinates volunteer efforts to aid what remains one of the most devastated communities in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The NAU Social Work Club is coordinating future trips to the area. Donations to the effort can be se sent to the NAU Foundation, PO Box 4094, Flagstaff, AZ 86011-4094. (Note "NAU Social Work Club/Katrina Efforts" in the memo field.)

NAU in the news

Past, present and future
The lives of Jim Burhans and his granddaughter Amber Fields this year are intertwining in some interesting ways. Fifty years after Burhans earned his master's degree at Northern Arizona University, Amber graduated from there and the ceremony celebrating her graduation recognized his status as a 'Golden Graduate,' also. Burhans later was looking at the program and saw his name among those listed as members of the class of 1956. 'I hadn't thought of it before that,' he said. 'I was excited once I saw that page in there.' Amber earned her bachelor's degree in forestry, for which Burhans had gone to school before heading off to World War II.

Real degrees through cyberspace
Northern Arizona University offers 15 undergraduate and 10 graduate programs online and is developing more. NAU officials foresee an online enrollment of 30,000 in five years, with an offering of about 700 courses.

A quarter for your thoughts?

Northern Arizonans will have a chance today to see proposed versions of the state quarter, as well as submit their own ideas. The Arizona Quarter Commission is in Flagstaff today seeking feedback from the community about what Arizona's quarter should include. James Bowie, a researcher at Northern Arizona University's Social Research Lab, said two icons topped the list of suggestions for the state quarter in a statewide survey: the Grand Canyon and the saguaro cactus.
