Speaker to address the effects As part of the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Satellite Seminar series on pop culture, NAU's Honors Program is hosting "Born to Buy: Advertising and the New Consumer," presented by Juliet Schor, professor of sociology at Boston College and author of the national best sellers, The Overworked American: The Unexpected Decline of Leisure and The Overspent American: Why We Want What We Don't Need. The seminar is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 8, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Liberal Arts, room 135. Schor will explore the changing world of children's consumer culture, with special emphasis on the role of marketing and its connection to popular culture. In the process, she will look at how commercial messages to children are developed, the cultural products children are now consuming, and how their growing involvement in consumer culture is affecting their well-being. The final seminar in the series, "Jesus in America: Personal Savior and Cultural Hero," will be Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 5:30 p.m. in the Communication building, room 246. More information on this seminar series, and this specific seminar, can be found here. |
