Laughter and learning during
National American Indian
Heritage Month

National American Indian Heritage Month will kick off with some laughs provided by Navajo Nation comedy team James & Ernie during a Showcase of Native American Entertainers at 6 p.m. Nov. 4 in Prochnow Auditorium. The evening also will feature music by the Voices of Inner Beauty and Soul: Radmilla Cody, Socie Saltwater and Marlena Begay. The cost is $12.

National American Indian Heritage Month will continue through November with a cornucopia of events on campus, including workshops about Native food, free films, movies and the Miss Indian NAU Pageant at 6 p.m. Nov. 30 in the Cline Library Assembly Hall.

Throughout the month, presenters from NAU's Applied Indigenous Studies will focus on a variety of topics that incorporate traditional and modern lifestyles. Marina Vasquez, will provide a Mayan Indian perspective about leadership, life and marriage, and how pine needle basket weaving can reduce stress. Navajo elder James Peshlakai will present "On the Beauty Way of Life," and Hopi elder Bob Lomadafkie will present "Hopi Village Decorum."

National American Indian Heritage Month was organized by NAU clubs and organizations, including Native Americans United, Native American Student Services and the Department of Applied Indigenous Studies.
