For many, United Way has personal meaning

For Molly Munger, director of community relations at NAU, assuming the chairperson responsibilities for NAU's current United Way of Northern Arizona campaign is an opportunity to inspire others and give back.

"United Way has made a difference in my life," Munger said. "Through United Way's support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flagstaff, my son was matched with a mentor who continues to be his friend as an adult. The relationship inspired my son to become a Big Brother too."

Munger said of the pairing, "The experience was a turning point in both of their lives."

Her son agrees. "My Big Brother had a huge impact on my personal development. He was a male role model who provided me with strength and guidance that I wouldn't have had otherwise," said David Carder.

Like dozens of other local agencies, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flagstaff receives a significant portion of its funding through United Way.

Munger urges NAU employees to take a minute to reflect how they, or others they know, have been helped by an agency supported by the United Way.

"Whether we realize it or not, almost everyone has been touched by United Way," Munger said. "It is an important influence in this community and provides tremendous outcomes for improving the lives of local children, families and seniors."

NAU's goal is to raise $70,000 by Dec. 15.
