
- Steven Barger, associate professor of psychology, published a paper, "Hypertension labeling was associated with poorer self-rated health in the Third U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey," in the February issue of the Journal of Human Hypertension. This work showed that hypertension labeling, but not high blood pressure, is associated with lower health-related quality of life among a large (19,057) sample of white, Hispanic, and black U.S. residents.
- From more than 310 entries, submissions by honor students Onalee Baumgartner and Katie Phelps, both English majors, have been accepted for publication in the 2006 edition of Scribendi, the student literary magazine of the Western Region Honors Council. They have been invited to present their works at the WRHC meeting this April in Denver. Another honors student, art history major Brittny Bevel, had a piece of art work accepted to the magazine as well.
- Stephanie Cotton, William Culbertson and Dennis Tanner, professors of health sciences, recently published The Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide for Speech and Hearing, a comprehensive study guide for introductory courses and textbooks in speech and hearing anatomy and physiology.
The workbook includes a comprehensive synopsis of anatomy and physiology, including such content as locator terms, planes of reference and anatomical position, enabling students to learn the vocabulary needed to study anatomy and physiology. It also addresses the basics of cells and tissues to form a foundation for study of larger structures, and organizes speech and hearing anatomy into the functional categories of respiration, phonation, and articulation, as well as the nervous and auditory systems.

Pam Foti was appointed chair of the department of Geography, Planning, and Recreation. Foti earned her bachelor's degree in parks and recreation administration from Ohio State University, a master's in wildland recreation from University of Nevada, Reno, and a doctorate in land resource management from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Foti, who has taught parks and recreation management at NAU since 1988, replaces Alan Lew, who is stepping down to return to teaching geography at NAU.
