ITS warns against Apple computers with Intel chip

Information Technology Services recommends that departments hold off on the purchase of any new Apple products featuring the Intel processors, including the iMac and MacBook Pro.

ITS is currently unable to resolve some reported problems that will affect work done on a day-to-day basis. Existing Mac software packages do not work as well on the Intel set.

Future releases of Office, Adobe and other products are planned to be compatible with the new Apple hardware and should function much better, but ITS does not know when these applications will be available.

ITS will attempt to provide support for any user who has one of the newer machines and will continue testing the new Apple systems and monitoring industry feedback.

The Power-PC iMacs and Powerbooks are still available from Apple, and ITS recommends the purchase of those products until they are no longer available.
