
- Matt A. Casado, professor in the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management, has completed the second phase of the J. William Fulbright Senior Specialists project in Myanmar (Burma). The purpose of this second award was the assessment of academic programs and the re-alignment of curricula of SCCD Hotel School in Rangoon, Soe San high school in Pyin-Oo Lwin, and Chindwin College in Mandalay. The goals of the project were to support curricular and faculty development and to provide institutional planning strategies for the host institutions.
- Mary I. Dereshiwsky, associate professor, educational leadership, had an article titled "Four E-challenges and How to Manage Them Successfully" published in the LERN Magazine 2006 Special Edition on Teaching and Learning. This magazine is published by the Learning Resources Network. Dereshiwsky also had six tips for online teaching published in the same issue.

NAU senior Johanna Nilsson is listed among the weekly "Faces in the Crowd" segment of the April 3 edition of Sports Illustrated. She is recognized for her NCAA Division I Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year honor.
Nilsson won the mile at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships by more than two seconds in 4:37.78, then returned to the track 90 minutes later to win the 3,000-meter run in a personal-best 9:06.61.
The 2005 NCAA champion in cross country, Nilsson also won the mile and 3,000 at 2006 Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships in Flagstaff.
- Northern Arizona University senior Vincentlee Ramirez, member of Collegiate Leadership Development Program, received a $1,000 scholarship from the Juan Andrade, Jr. Scholarship fund for Young Hispanic Leaders.
Ramirez is a marketing major at Northern Arizona University and plans to continue his education in the business master's program at NAU. He graduated from Flagstaff High School.
"Ramirez is one of our most active students and shows the leadership qualities and skills that the CLDP promotes," said David Camacho, special assistant to NAU President John Haeger. "His peers listen to him, he is respected and well thought of."
Ramirez was presented the award at the 24th annual Hispanic Leadership Conference last month. Only 15 scholarships were awarded nationwide.
"I felt honored to receive this award. It made me feel that I was actually accomplishing something," Ramirez said.
The CLDP, a Hispanic student organization, teaches practical leadership skills in an applied setting. At NAU, the organization works to increase recruitment and retention of Latino students.
- Donelle Ruwe, assistant professor of English, delivered a paper at the 18th- and 19th-century British Women Writer's Conference at the University of Florida-Gainsville in March. Her paper, "Original Poems for Infant Minds: From the Rational Dame to the Kate Greenaway Gown," discussed the reception history of an 1804 poem, "My Mother," by the children's poet Ann Taylor. The paper traced shifting images of motherhood in the Victorian era through the 1980s bestselling picturebook, Love You Forever.
- NAU's Office of Alumni & Constituent Relations received the 2005-2006 Web Rebranding Award from Kintera, Inc. for its revamped website, www.naualumni.com. The award was presented at Kintera's March user conference in San Diego. Program coordinator Julie Ward from NAU accepted the honor on behalf of the entire web design team, which also includes program coordinator Anne Walden, Krista Perkins, special assistant to the director, and former alumni executive director Josh Allen.
