Antivirus software conversion occurring next week

ITS will convert the university's antivirus software to Sophos next week, and computer systems on the NAU campus network will receive the update automatically.

To ensure campus computers receive the automatic update properly, ITS recommends following these guidelines:

  • Beginning June 19, reboot your computer each evening as you leave work—but leave it turned on overnight—until you see a Sophos logo in the task bar instead of the McAfee red shield. This indicates the computer successfully received the antivirus conversion overnight. Users do not need to be logged on.
  • Computers that are shut down overnight or were not rebooted the evening prior will receive the upgrade the first time it is rebooted or when users first log on to it. The update will take approximately 10 to 20 minutes. Unlike other automatic updates, this update will not allow users to continue working while it runs in the background.
  • Do not interrupt the update process once it has started. Turning the computer off or similar interruptions could compromise the update, and may even cause other problems.

Beginning June 26, NAU faculty, staff and students can download Sophos antivirus software for their home computers by visiting the ITS software download page.
