More parking Q&A

The dialogue about parking changes at NAU continues this week, with new questions about conference center parking and campus safety.

Read a compilation of all the parking questions and answers submitted through Inside NAU.

QUESTION: It is interesting that the "expanded conference center" is accompanied by a smaller garage: three instead of four floors "to keep costs lower." An afterthought to the headline and poorly phrased as well.

What are the implications of this change in light of the already tight parking on campus? Perhaps the parking lot change should be the headline, not the size of the conference center. Looking forward to your response.

ANSWER: The Inside NAU article focused on the expansion of the conference center because we felt it outweighed the reduction of the adjacent parking garage. The conference center parking garage will be mainly for conference-goers and hotel guests, and should have minimal impact on NAU staff, faculty and students. While a handful of employees may choose to park there—at an additional fee—most will be parking elsewhere. The additional square footage to the conference center will better accommodate any of the groups meeting there.

Q: I am a north campus resident who is concerned about the changes to parking availability. With the closing of parking lot 1, parking available to north residents will be severely reduced. Considering that I work until about 10 p.m. and parking typically fills up by then, I am uncomfortable with walking alone very far at that time of night. I understand that inconvenience comes with change but safety should not be compromised in order to do so.

A: NAU provides safety escorts for anyone on campus. The 24-hour-a-day service is available by calling (928) 523-3611.
