'Inside NAU' introduces new look

Inside NAU, the weekly newsletter for faculty, staff and friends of Northern Arizona University, is unveiling a new look this week in response to readers who suggested that it was time for a makeover and wanted the articles organized differently.

The new layout allows readers to quickly find what they are interested in. Those who want more information can click on the news headlines for the complete story.

We've also added a link to a weekly calendar of events, which displays all the events published in the NAU Events Calendar, but in an at-a-glance format by event category.

The suggestions came from a web survey conducted in the spring by the Office of Public Affairs. If you have additional input, e-mail Inside@nau.edu.

Overall, the survey shows that Inside NAU is well read by NAU faculty and staff and the majority of readers are satisfied with its contents. Among some of the findings:

  • Of the 402 NAU faculty and staff who completed the survey, 71 percent usually or always read their weekly e-mail version of Inside NAU. Less than 1 percent said they never read the newsletter.
  • The majority of readers are more than just scanning the newsletter. Seventy-five percent said they always or frequently read most stories in their entirety.
  • Several comments indicate that often there is too much information, while others readers said they find too little depth in the newsletter's content. Despite diverse needs of our readers, 75 percent indicated they were satisfied with the contents of Inside NAU.
  • The electronic version of Inside NAU is by far the preferred format for readers, with 95 percent indicating they never or rarely read the printed version.

Respondents offered a number of thoughtful and constructive suggestions for improving Inside NAU and campus communication as a whole.

The results offer a good cross-section of the intended audience, with 56 percent of respondents (226) categorizing their primary role here as staff and 32 percent (127) as faculty members. Nine percent (37) of respondents said they were part of the administration. Ninety percent (361) submitted their responses using the online survey, while 10 percent (41) used the printed version of the survey.

Complete survey results are available online.
